2023 Estrella Trial Advocacy Competition (ETAC)

9th Estrella Trial Advocacy Competition

San Juan, Puerto Rico, January 11, 2023.  Estrella, LLC and George Washington University Law School announce their 9th edition of the Estrella Trial Advocacy Competition (ETAC) to be held on April 15 & 16, 2023, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

“We are delighted to be hosting the ninth edition of our competition.  Returning to an in-person competition last year was very exciting.  For this year’s competition, we received a record-breaking number of applications.  We are proud that the teams selected represent every major time zone, as well as every tier of the US News Rankings.  We look forward to this year’s competition,” said Alberto G. Estrella, Managing Member of Estrella, LLC.

ETAC will begin on April 15th with the preliminary rounds, and the final rounds will take place on April 16th, where the winner of the competition will be announced.

This event allows the students to put their law school training and knowledge to the test by preparing and presenting a civil case before a panel of seasoned trial attorneys and judges.  They get to argue their cases, delivering opening and closing arguments, arguing pretrial motions, presenting evidence, and conducting direct and cross-examinations. At the end of each session, the panel provides feedback to the students to further their professional careers’ development.

The prestigious 14 law schools participating in ETAC this year are:

  • Baylor Law
  • Campbell University School of Law
  • Cardozo Law
  • Florida International University College of Law
  • Fordham Law School
  • The George Washington University Law School
  • Golden Gate University, School of Law
  • Louisiana State University Law Center
  • Northwestern Pritzker School of Law
  • Stetson College of Law
  • University of Colorado Law School
  • University of Illinois College of Law
  • University of North Carolina School of Law
  • University of Virginia

We are proud of the fact that a full third of the Teams competing consists of schools joining us for the first time.  They will compete against the one school that has come every year (not the host), three former champions, four former finalists, and four former semi-finalists.

This year’s competition is also sponsored by the Hon. Raymond L. Acosta Puerto Rico Chapter of the Federal Bar Association (FBA-PR).  The FBA-PR is one of the largest chapters in the nation, and its mission is to strengthen the federal legal system and administration of justice by serving the interests and the needs of the federal practitioner, the federal judiciary, and the public they serve.  It is dedicated to promoting the welfare, interests, education, and professional development of its law student members and attorney members involved in federal law.  It further serves as liaison between the bar and bench, as well as the private and public sectors.
